IACP Workshop Review
The Art of Dream Interpretation

Presenter: Paul Bradley

Venue: Brandon house hotel, New Ross, Co. Wexford
Dates: 17th & 18th October 2009

Reviewed by: Ursula Ryan MIACP

Paul Bradley is a Jungian Psychotherapist, Dream Analyst and Group Facilitator.
The aim of the workshop was to give counsellors and therapists an introduction and practical guide to dream interpretation.
The workshop was attended by 18 counsellors and therapists.
Day 1
Paul introduces himself, his own background and the personal experiences that led him to develop a keen interest in Dream Work.
Like all of us at the workshop, dreams have held a fascination for him and we wait in excited anticipation to delve into the mysterious realm of the unconscious dream world.
Paul provides a handout at the start of both days of the workshop allowing us to follow the theory without getting too anxious about taking notes. He explains that this workshop will be 80% practical allowing some in the group to process their own dreams with him while the rest of the group observe. In the two weeks previous to the workshop he had sent emails to all the participants with guidelines on remembering our own dreams and writing them down so that we would all have dreams to process if we so wished.
Paul has a person centred approach to interpreting dreams and it is through this approach we learn that it is in fact the client, not the therapist, who interprets their dream. The client has the information about their own dream and the role of the therapist is to LISTEN to the detail of the clients dream.
Dreams are made up of images and each image has a specific meaning for the dreamer. The therapist records detail of the images and helps to establish the personal associations to the images in the dream. The therapist explores any feelings the dreamer has to these associations and finally relates the dream to everyday life. The dreamer reaches his/her own AHA moment when light is shed, through this process, on the meaning of their dream.
It is difficult to understand initially how the process develops before we see the work in action. We are encouraged to hold the image of a river in mind, a river moves as it flows. As we work on dreams we start to see how the process starts to move from images to associations, from associations to feelings. It gathers momentum and flows; the therapist gently guiding and aiding this process.
By the end of the first day either by being directly involved in the process (Paul working on our dream) or through observation, we all had a good initial grasp of dream interpretation and were eagerly looking forward to day 2.
On day 2 Paul recapped on the previous day, encouraging us as therapists to trust the process and to trust ourselves within the process. We quickly moved on getting to grips with more material on dreams, I was most thankful for the handout on this day. We covered the various Dream Types, these include; daydreams/fantasies, anxiety dreams, recurring dreams, nightmares, prophetic dreams, compensation dreams and archetypal dreams.
Paul covered detail on each type while the compensation and archetypal dream types evoked most discussion and exploration.
This review doesn’t allow the space to cover all the detail however to note for interest, compensation dreams play an important role in our natural tendency for homeostasis/balance. Archetypal Dreams are dreams that feature figures, objects, experiences not experienced in everyday life e.g., gods, demons etc. The contents of the Collective Unconscious are made up of archetypes, humans inherit the outline of these archetypes however each individual fills these in according to the way we experience our lives. Huge discussion ensued around archetypal dreams and the Collective Unconscious, which was very thought provoking and genuinely could have taken up the full day and more. However we were also eager to get on with more practical demonstrations of dream interpretation. Thus the remainder of the day involved Paul working on dreams within the group, again allowing us to learn through participation.

Those who had their dreams interpreted/ and the observers, all felt that this was a very gentle and safe way of working with clients.
The therapist only goes where the client leads them before finally integrating the dream into the client’s psychotherapeutic process.
Watching the process was fascinating and most insightful. I must say personally I felt honoured to share in the experience with the group.
On a final note the overall feeling was that the workshop had been very well presented and had real value for us in our day to day work as counsellors and therapists.
Paul has an extremely gentle and most respectful way of working, which was so reassuring and I believe added greatly to the enriching experience felt by those attending his workshop.
